The video below was shown this morning at the on-going Social Media World Forum Asia in Singapore, during a presentation by Chris Schaumann, Global Advertising & Digital Lead (Asia Pacific & Greater China Region), Microsoft Corporation.YouTube - Social Media Revolution It is created by Erik Qualman, author of the book Socialnomics: How social media transforms the way we live and do business. Interesting facts & figures in the video, probably good to ‘wow’ the uninitiated about social media. So, is social media a fad? The video has this to say:

Social media isn’t a fad; it’s a fundamental shift in the way we communicate.

In the dot-com era, e-commerce changed the way we conduct business activities. Social media is changing the way we interact and converse with the market. Memes shifting from transactional (e-commerce) to conversational (social media).

  1. I believe it is a fad to some people.

    They join because their friends are in there, they FB / Tweet / MySpace or whatever else…………. after a while they got bored and look for something else.

  2. It’s fad because it’s treated as a fad – at least to those in business. Just like how Television was a fad. Or Online. or Google.

    They either proclaim it’s a fad, and just ignore it until it’s too late. Or they scramble and shout “OMG, our competitors are on it, we need to be on it!”. Both, a classic behavior towards fads.
