TonTon, the online video portal by Malaysia’s largest integrated media company, Media Prima Bhd, has been experiencing impressive growth since its launch on August 06 2010. Website traffic has tripled since January this year. Currently, there are over 1.6 million registered users and half of them are weekly active unique users, with daily return rate of 73%. In June 2011, there are 8.8 million page views on TonTon.
Another interesting stat is that the site has served over 1.1 million video hours in the last 30 days. That’s 300 terabytes of video contents! TonTon website had recorded its highest concurrent streams, at 4,300.
With such growth figures, it is little wonder Media Prima started to monetize its community by introducing Premium contents on TonTon end of last month. TonTon users can buy single episode or full season shows.
Viewers use Credits to purchase Premium contents on TonTon. Credits can be purchased via credit / direct cards or online banking. Each Credit costs RM1 and the Credits are valid for 6 months. Once purchased, each video comes with predefined access period i.e. 1 month or 3 month. To date, there are 16 show packages and over 50 single episodes for viewers to purchase.
According to Paul Moss, General Manager of Platforms, Technology, New Business at Alt Media (which is Media Prima’s digital and new media subsidiary), the Premium feature is in its first phase and users can expect even more features and also more Premium contents on TonTon in the weeks to come. However, TonTon will continue to offer free TV shows, movies and videos from all Media Prima’s TV and radio channels.
