The $1 billion acquisition of Instagram by Facebook underscored the mobile photo sharing craze. But the recent closure of Andreessen Horowitz-backed PicPlz might signal an impending consolidation in the market space.
However, one of the latest entrants, Pudding.to app, has been growing impressively since its launch in February this year – Android on February 13 2012 and iOS on February 15 2012.
The mobile photo sharing app is developed by KT Hitel Co., Ltd., a subsidiary of Korea Telecom Group (KT Group is Korea’s largest communications company). A week after its launch in February 2012, the social photo sharing app gained over 500,000 users and registered 1.65 downloads per second. Within two months, total app downloads exceeded two million with a total of 2,840,000 photos uploaded.
Today, there are over a million active Pudding.to users clicking a million photo likes a week, on average.
The social photo app is particularly popular in Asia, with 77% of its users are from the Asian region, followed by North America (14.3%) and Europe (4%). The top five cities with most active users on Pudding.to are Seoul, Kuala Lumpur, Bangkok, Hong Kong, and Singapore.
KT Hitel is no stranger in the mobile apps world. The company branded itself as the Smart Mobile Company, focusing on smart mobile business, content distribution platform business, and developing value-added solutions for the KT Group. Besides Pudding.to, the company has three other highly popular apps, Pudding Camera, I’m IN, and Korean Celeb Face Match.
For example, Pudding Camera app has over 11 million downloads since its launch in 2010 and is well known among the Korean pop celebrities.
A Few Good Features
KT HiTEL tapped into its experience with Pudding Camera to build the Pudding.to app. This resulted in a mobile app which is well-polished and feature-packed, though I’m not a fan of its filters. Compared to Pudding Camera, the Pudding.to app has less visually appealing image filters. Of course, users can easily post filtered photos, from Pudding Camera app to Pudding.to app. Both apps are free.
Besides filters, Pudding.to also come with these interesting features:
- Emotion tagging: User can assign (tag) an emotion to each photo.
- Multi layout: Post a photo collage, up to 4 photos, and come with auto-layouts and frame designs.
- Tag: User can also attached location, song, and #tags to each photo. These tags contextualize postings and enable users to discover more meaningful contents on the app.
