The giants of the internet age are Google, Apple, Amazon, and Facebook, according The Economist. Each of these giants is a leader in specific product space(s) in the modern-day internet superstructure, in terms of market share and/or profits.
Last night, the Prime Minister Malaysia, Dato’ Sri Najib Razak has surpassed one million followers on Twitter. With this milestone, the Prime Minister has surpassed the one million mark on both Facebook and Twitter in 2012 (Facebook Page surpassed one million fans in May 2012). And this undoubtedly makes him the most followed Malaysian on Twitter and Facebook.

FACEBOOK NOW HAS OVER 950 MILLION USERS WORLDWIDE and 80% of its user base are from outside U.S. and Canada.
As of end of Quarter 2 2012, Facebook exceeds 200 million users in Asia. There are now 204.9 million Facebook users in Asia, which is roughly 27% of Facebook’s non-US/Canada user base.
Facebook opened its door to everyone worldwide on September 26 2006. In Asia, Facebook took 49 months to reach the 100 million users mark. With its unabating phenomenal popularity worldwide, the social networking giant took just 20 months to add another 100 million Asian users.
However, Facebook users growth in Asia has been slowing since the beginning of 2011, from its peak of 21% in Q4 2010. In second quarter of 2012, its Asian user base grew by 5.5%.
Facebook has over 850 million users worldwide. Out of that, a total of 194 million users are from Asia at the end of March 2012. Most of these users from the Southeast Asia region – 97 million or 54% of the total Facebook users in Asia. Some other observations on the latest Facebook in Asia statistics:
- In early February 2012, India surpassed Indonesia to become Facebook No. 1 Nation in Asia. Back in January 2011, India has 16.9 million Facebook users. Now, the country has over 45.9 million Facebook users.
- In addition to India, Japan has been growing impressively in the past 1 year or so. Japan started the year 2011 with 1.8 million Facebook users. Today, there are over 8 million users in Japan.
- South Korea has been growing with double digits figure. The country is now ahead of Pakistan in the Facebook in Asia list.
- Among the top ten countries, India, Japan, and South Korea has been the high-growth Facebook nations since early 2011. Throughout 2012, Facebook will be focusing on these three countries for users acquisition, as the Big Blue of the social web aims to reach the 1 billion users mark.
2012 will be the year when hotels wake up to the power of social media as a primary (rather than alternative) customer communications and relationship channels, says the Hotel Yearbook 2012 report. According to another projection, half of the travel industry will be using social media as a way of generating revenue and bookings by 2016. Globally, hotels are ramping up and fine-tuning their social strategies. They are adapting to the social web dynamics and building goodwill building with customers.
A leading five-star hotel Grand Millennium Kuala Lumpur recently became the first hotel in Malaysia to offer direct room booking on its Facebook Page. Users can check room availability and instantly book the room within the Facebook environment. Those who book the rooms can also enjoy fans-only rates and earn loyalty reward points. Grand Millennium is working with Sabre Hospitality Solutions to enable this social booking feature.
McDonald’s Malaysia Facebook Page has just surpassed the 1 million fans mark. Now, there are four Pages with more than a million fans in the Most Popular Facebook Pages in Malaysia list. It took McDonald’s Malaysia almost three years to rake in a million fans on Facebook; the Page was created in April 2009.
KFC Malaysia is still reeling from the blows from its punching-customer crisis. But don’t expect any sympathy from its competitor, Nando Malaysia. The restaurant chain, specializing in flame-grilled Peri-Peri chicken dishes, tries to play on the current sentiment among social media users. The company just posted a poster on its Facebook Page, which says:

From now until March 31 2011, passengers of Malaysia Airlines (MAS) can earn 1,000 “Enrich Miles” when they book their air tickets via the MHBuddy app on Facebook. Enrich is a loyalty and frequent flyer programme of MAS with 1.9 million members worldwide.
MAS launched its MHBuddy app in February 2011, which allows its customers to book tickets, select seats, access travel itinerary and also, flight check-ins. The app taps into users’ social graph i.e. share travel plans and experiences with family and friends on Facebook, identifying who might be sharing the same flight, among others. The app was developed for MAS by SITA Lab.
In 2011, Facebook added 69 million new Asian users in 2011. The social networking giant with $100 billion valuation started 2011 with 112 million Asian users and ended the year with 181 million users.
However, its quarterly growth has been sliding steadily in 2011, from 17% in Quarter 1 to 8% in Quarter 4. In Quarter 4 2010, it was growing at 21%.
2010 was the year when Facebook went on hyper-drive growth on users acquisition front in Asia. However, 2011 was the year when Facebook downshifted a gear or two. The decline is expected to continue as many Asian nations are reaching saturation level.

There are now over 12 million Facebook users and possibly, hundreds of thousands of Twitter users in Malaysia. Social tools are becoming more pervasive. In 2011, the tools are a force to be reckon with.
Malaysians (and elsewhere) used social media tools to amplify their dissatisfaction about various issues – from election reform to proposed Bill to government initiatives. Not only protests though. In 2011, we also saw a high-profile Malaysian CEO posting his unvarnished thoughts/opinions on social media, a record breaking tweetup, and a marriage proposal that went massively viral worldwide!
These days, whatever happens offline, the news get propagated across social networks. Whatever happens in social media space gets attention in the physical world.
In the past 365 days, there were many interesting things happening in the Malaysian social media scene. Here are some of the most notable, memorable ones.
The total Facebook users in Malaysia has surpassed the 12 million mark. On January 1 2011, there were a total of 9.5 million Facebook users in Malaysia. Last week, it has reached 12 million. As of today, the estimated total stands at 12,060,200.
With a total Internet users of 17.5 million, the Facebook penetration in Malaysia is just a whisker shy of 70%.
From January 2011 to December 2011, the Facebook user base has been growing at an average rate of 26%. The growth rate is markedly reduced compared to the last year’s rate of 87% (March 2010 – December 2010). The growth rate is expected to decline further in 2012, with the increasing level of Facebook penetration in this country, continuing privacy concerns, onset of Facebook lethargy, and onslaught of emerging new online time sucks.
