For three years in a row, South Korea tops the ICT development ranking by ITU. Sweden ranked second, followed by Iceland, Denmark and Finland.
ITU has developed ICT Development Index (IDI) to measure development progress across countries, in terms of level of access, usage among citizens and skills among 157 economies worldwide.
There are five Asian economies represented in the top 20, namely South Korea, Hong Kong, Japan, Macao and Singapore. Most countries in the Asia region have declined in the IDI 2012 ranking compared to 2011 (see below). However, Mongolia (up 5 places) and Bangladesh (up 4 places) are two of the most dynamic countries in world, in terms of IDI improvements.
Facebook has over 850 million users worldwide. Out of that, a total of 194 million users are from Asia at the end of March 2012. Most of these users from the Southeast Asia region – 97 million or 54% of the total Facebook users in Asia. Some other observations on the latest Facebook in Asia statistics:
- In early February 2012, India surpassed Indonesia to become Facebook No. 1 Nation in Asia. Back in January 2011, India has 16.9 million Facebook users. Now, the country has over 45.9 million Facebook users.
- In addition to India, Japan has been growing impressively in the past 1 year or so. Japan started the year 2011 with 1.8 million Facebook users. Today, there are over 8 million users in Japan.
- South Korea has been growing with double digits figure. The country is now ahead of Pakistan in the Facebook in Asia list.
- Among the top ten countries, India, Japan, and South Korea has been the high-growth Facebook nations since early 2011. Throughout 2012, Facebook will be focusing on these three countries for users acquisition, as the Big Blue of the social web aims to reach the 1 billion users mark.

The online world is awash in a deluge of information. We are seeing emergence of more creative, innovative ways to mix and mash the information to create value propositions for users.
A Hong Kong startup, AfterShip, just launched a new web service that aggregates and repurposes packages delivery status data to create compelling value for both e-commerce merchants and buyers. The service is capable of automatically detecting shipment numbers of over 40 couriers worldwide and provides online merchants a consolidated view of delivery status of all their packages – in-transit, delivered or delayed. It also provides shipping insights for online merchants to analyze their shipping historical records. Online merchants can also send out customized delivery status notification messages to customers through SMS, e-mail or Twitter. With this, merchants can reduce customers’ questions about delivery status. For customers, they no longer need to deal with tracking numbers and track packages on their own, as they are automatically notified on the latest delivery status of their packages.
In 2011, Facebook added 69 million new Asian users in 2011. The social networking giant with $100 billion valuation started 2011 with 112 million Asian users and ended the year with 181 million users.
However, its quarterly growth has been sliding steadily in 2011, from 17% in Quarter 1 to 8% in Quarter 4. In Quarter 4 2010, it was growing at 21%.
2010 was the year when Facebook went on hyper-drive growth on users acquisition front in Asia. However, 2011 was the year when Facebook downshifted a gear or two. The decline is expected to continue as many Asian nations are reaching saturation level.

A total of 1.2 billion people (15 years and above) watched 201.4 billion online videos in October 2011 alone, according to the latest comScore report.
It is not surprising that Google Sites (with YouTube as the key driver) is the top global online video destination, with 88.3 billion videos viewed during the month. Youku, China’s YouTube, is in distant second with 4.6 billion videos viewed and VEVO is third with 3.7 billion videos. Users of the world’s most popular social network, Facebook viewed a total of 2.6 billion videos on the platform.
Facebook now has over 800 million users worldwide, with 168 million are from Asia. In Quarter 3 this year, Facebook added 16.8 million new users in Asia (compared to 19.5 million in Quarter 2 2011). So far this year, the social network has added some 56 million new users; it started the year with 111 million Asian users. Its latest quarter-on-quarter growth rate is 11%. However, the rate has been somewhat slowing since end of 2010 – from 24% in Quarter 4 2010 to 17% Q1’11 to 15% Q2’11 to 11% Q3’11.
Today is iPad 2 launch day in Malaysia (together with Hong Kong, India, Israel, Korea, Macau, Malaysia, Philippines, Singapore, South Africa, Turkey and UAE). Apple launched iPad 2 on March 02 2011 and two months later, the latest generation iPad reaches the Malaysian shores. The first generation iPad took seven long months, after launch announcement, before it was officially available in Malaysia on November 30 2010. That means, the launch gap between iPad and iPad 2 is only 5 months!

World Economic Forum (WEF) on Tuesday released the latest edition of The Global Information Technology Report 2010 – 2011: Transformation 2.0 report. The annual report ranks a total of 138 countries worldwide, using its Networked Readiness Index (NRI).
- A total of 19 Asian countries in the 2010-2011 NRI list, out of 138 countries worldwide.
- 5 Asian countries are in the top 20 of this year’s NRI list – Singapore (2nd), Taiwan (5), South Korea (10), Hong Kong (12), and Japan (19).
- Singapore is the most networked nation in Asia. The Southeast Asian city-state ranked second in the world, behind Sweden.
- Singapore is also the only Asian country ranked higher than the United States (no. 5 worldwide).
- Malaysia ranked first among Upper-middle Income group of countries. Malaysia is also the only upper-middle income country in the top 30 overall. The country’s score increased from 4.65 in 2010 to 4.74 in 2011.
Since March 2010, I’ve been monitoring the growth of Facebook users in Asia on GreyReview. In October 2010, I’ve found out that Facebook exceeds the 100 million users mark. At the start of year 2011, there was an estimated total of 111.9 million of Facebook users in Asia.
This is the latest edition of Facebook in Asia series. The followings are some interesting observations of Facebook growth in Asia in the first three months of 2011:
- The latest estimated number of Facebook users in Asia: 131.3 million.
- Total Facebook users grew by 17.3% in the Quarter 1 2011, which is slightly less than the 21.4% in the previous quarter (Quarter 4 2010).
- Indonesia continues to lead with 35.2 million users. Second-placed India with 23 million, followed by Philippines (22.4 million), Malaysia (10.1 million) and Taiwan (9.1 million)
As of January 01 2011, there are a total of 111.9 million Facebook users in Asia. The social network added almost 20 million new Asian users in the Quarter 4 2010. After increasing by 10 million users in the month of October 2010, Facebook experienced growth slow down between November 2010 and December 2010. Nevertheless, Facebook population grew by 21.4% in Asia in the last quarter of 2010.
In November 2010, Indonesia overtook the UK to become the world’s second largest market for Facebook (behind the United States.) In Quarter 4 2010, over 5 million new users from world’s fourth most populous nation joined Facebook. Indonesia also widened its gap with second-place Philippines over the last 3 months. In November 01 2010, the gap between Indonesia and second-place Philippines was 11,901,900 users. Now, the gap is 13,227,560.
Today, there are over 32 million Indonesians using Facebook. Philippines is behind Indonesia, with over 18 million, followed by India (16.9 million), Malaysia (9.5 million) and Taiwan (8.7 million).
In the beginning of October 2010, there were a total of 92.1 million Facebook users in Asia. By end of the month, the figure has surpassed the 100 million user mark (specifically, 102.2 million). That’s an increase of 10.1 million users in a month or 10.9% month-on-month growth!
Indonesia continues to top the Facebook Population in Asia list with 29.8 million users. Although the country is fast approaching the 30 million user mark, the most populous Southeast Asian nation continues to show impressive 12.2% growth rate (the 10th highest among the Asian nations). During the month of October 2010, Indonesia registered the highest increase of % of Total Facebook Population in Asia, an increase of 0.3 percentage point, from 28.9% to 29.2% (India increased by 0.2 percentage point and Japan with 0.1).
Cambodia registered the highest growth rate at 24.6%, followed by Afghanistan (23.3%), Mongolia (19.7%), Japan (19.6%) and South Korea (18.9%). And Bangladesh joined the 1-million users group in October 2010. As of now, there are a total of 13 countries in Asia with over a million Facebook users.
